Two city fast-food joints are calling themselves Obama Fried Chicken - and the new names are ruffling some feathers.

Eateries in Brooklyn and Manhattan plastered the new President's last name on their awnings recently.

And some passersby are cringing, saying the name change plays into old racial stereotypes.

"Why name it that? Just because Obama is black, they're going to put his name on a fried chicken place in a black neighborhood?" said Akilah Nassy, 16, outside the Brooklyn store.

"If it were [Republican candidate John] McCain, nobody would make a McCain fried chicken place."

Several weeks ago, S&T Fried Chicken on St. Nicholas Ave. in Harlem formally renamed itself after the country's first black President.

And last week, Royal Fried Chicken on Rutland Road in Brownsville, Brooklyn, did the same.

Staff at both eateries say the names are meant to pay homage to the new President, not offend customers or capitalize on his popularity.

"Basically, the owner loves Obama," said Mohammad Jabbar, 33, manager of the Brownsville store. "He loves him seriously. He supports him."

Some customers in Brooklyn said it didn't matter what the owners' intentions were - the new President's name shouldn't be there.

"They think because they throw up Obama's name, black people are going to come in more to get fried chicken," said Seth DeVries, 28, a roofer from Brownsville.

Beyond the racial overtones, some critics found it distasteful that a business would try to make a profit from a historic election. "You see a lot of that in this area - slapping Obama's name on businesses to make money," said Khayeen Adams Sr., a furniture store employee in Brooklyn.

In Harlem, the reaction was very different. Business was brisk, and few customers seemed offended at the restaurant, which placed a portrait of the First Family near the cash register.

However, student Skyler McCrimmon, 17, thought the name might be more appropriate "if it were a fancy restaurant."

And Alphonso Brown, 52, joked that naming a business after a politician could be problematic.

"Right now, Obama's popular, but if his ratings go down, maybe they'll change the name again," he said.

The albums that defined an era and expanded the genre beyond what the previously defined boundaries of what we thought it was.

So here's my theory...We got a generation of artists who were raised by these albums, and each of us wants to create our own version of a blend of these albums as we think best expresses what we're trying to say to the world. No 2 versions are gonna sound exactly the same, and they're not supposed to. My version isn't gonna sounds like Mickey's or Charles' or Cudi's or Wale's or Skyzoo's or Torae's or Stimuli's or Donny's or anybody else for that matter although there may be some similarities.

So, with that said, prepare for EVOLVED. And know where the inspiration is coming from, and what I've evolved from.

Why can't every week be like this? Flew out to Vegas Tuesday morning, almost missed my flight, landed out in the Desert Tuesday at noon and proceeded to get it in. Performed at The Palms on Tuesday night, which was a really dope experience, went to Rain which was retardedly HUGE and retardedly PACKED. Imagine Santos but about 5-10 times bigger. Yea. Zoo. Pardon me for rambling I'm in a thinking mood...

I know I know, us rappers are supposed to be exempt from such deep topics, but yes, even people who chose rap as a career have moral dilemmas. First and foremost Shortstop I'm proud of u for the way that you're dealing with the situation that you're dealing with. not too many people have your courage these days. What my homie is going through is what brought me to think about this...

All men and women are not created equal. Some of us are born with Silver Spoons, some with Plastic Spoons, and some with no spoons at all. Underneath it all, yes, we're all the same, just bones, blood, water, skin, muscle, etc etc. But there's a huge difference in the opportunities that are afforded to someone who is born into wealth, a stable family that can support them, and someone who's not as fortunate from day 1.

Someone born into wealth can afford to drop out of school, come up with an amazing idea, have their parents fund it or help them get funding and create their own wealth. Someone who has an opportunity, no matter how small it may be, will always at least have a chance of turning that opportunity into progress. But someone who isn't given any of these things, they're the ones who have to make a way out of no way.

There are always exceptions to these rules, but these people are the outliers, not the norm. Look at the poorest neighborhoods in the world, and then look at where the highest crime rates, disease rates, incarceration rates and lowest life expectancies are. Yep, they're pretty much the same places. And you can pretty much name them off the top of your head if you think hard enough.

What's funny to me is when people condemn another person for whatever they have to do to make their way through life. We each only get one, so as long as you live yours on your terms, I'm cool with whoever you become. What we have to remember through all that, is that more often than not we're actually more similar than we are different. We usually just let that ONE difference dominate our perceptions of each other.

Some people don't even dare to have dreams. they get so caught up in the depression that is their day to day reality that they can't see outside of it. I'm glad that I choose to surround myself with people who won't allow themselves to be Crabs in a Bucket. Our dreams and aspirations are what drive us. Don't let anyone kill yours.

A good friend of mine is going through an extremely tough time in her life right now. I'm not going to say her name or what she's going through because honestly that's her business. The fact that she even confided in me makes me even less likely to talk about it to anyone other than people I might reach out to for advice on how to console her. It's amazing to me how quick people can be to judge or want to tear someone down, thinking that tearing someone down is somehow going to build them up.

I dont give a fuck what my friend may have done, or how she may have lived her life. We all have demons and skeletons in our closets. Let he without sin cast the first stone. I dont see anyone throwing shit if those are the terms that we're all held to. I dont give a fuck how u feel about her, whether you think its real or true or not. And please for the love of my sanity, unless we're really friends and you know what the fuck is going on, don't ask me how I feel about it. What really kills me about the fact that so many people (Faux News included) are bitching about the last :30 second of Dr. Lowery's Benediction is that they neglect the other 4 and a half minutes of it. There are those that would seriously wish to criticize Dr. Lowery and by association President Obama for paraphrasing a song that was extremely controversial at the time of its writing, but also painfully true.

There are those that want to think that simply because Our President Is Black that all the sudden there are no more problems in Black America. Everything must be ok, because they have one of them in the office, right? Pardon my French but FUCKOUTTAHERE.

I had to do some research myself just to find out who Rev. Dr. Lowery is, and here's what I found via Wikipedia:

His career in the civil rights movement began in the early 1950s in Mobile, Alabama. After Rosa Parks' arrest in 1955, Lowery helped lead the Montgomery bus boycott. In 1957, with Martin Luther King, Jr. Lowery founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and subsequently led the organization as its president from 1977 to 1997.

At the request of Martin Luther King Jr., Lowery led the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965. Lowery is a co-founder and former president of the Black Leadership Forum, a consortium of black advocacy groups. The Forum protested Apartheid in South Africa in the mid 1970s until the election of Nelson Mandela. Joseph Lowery was among the first five African Americans to get arrested at the South African Embassy in Washington D.C. during the Free South Africa movement. Lowery served as pastor of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta from (1986-92), adding over a thousand members and leaving the church with ten acres of land. He is now retired but remains active in the civil rights movement.

To honor Reverend Lowery, the City of Atlanta renamed Ashby Street for him. Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard is just west of downtown Atlanta and runs north-south beginning at West Marietta Street near the campus of Georgia Tech and stretching to White Street in the West End neighborhood, running past Atlanta's Historically Black Colleges and Universities: Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morris Brown College. Perhaps not coincidentally, the street intersects both Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive and Ralph David Abernathy Freeway.

Obviously Rev. Dr. Lowery is not just a participant. He Co-Founded the SLC with Dr. King, was asked PERSONALLY by Dr. King to lead the march from Selma to Montgomery, and didn't stop with the Civil Rights Movement, he involved himself with the fight against Apartheid as well. Truly a man to be admired, not criticized.

What a lot of people (myself included) may not have known is that he delivered one of the most powerful speeches at the Funeral of Dr. Coretta Scott King back in 2007 as well

New Year, New Thought Process...

Last year I learned a lot about myself. I realized exactly what I'm capable of. A bit of it may have just been proving things to myself. I was in a relationship, which taught me a whole lot, I put out a lot of music completely on my own, from recording in my own bedroom to mixing myself to blasting out to friends, family, bloggers, fans, etc etc.

For a while there was a big part of me that didn't want to be an "Independent" artist because of the stigma that goes along with it. But with the collapse that we've seen across the Music Industry over the last few years, Independent and Major aren't that far away from each other anymore. Molds are breaking everyday and new molds are forming a new generation of artists that I'm proud to be a part of.

A lot of people around me had some pretty impressive accomplishments last year also. It's always a good thing to surround yourself with people who are just as driven as you. Everyone feeds off of the other's energy even if sometimes its from a distance. Mickey Factz & Charles Hamilton were on the cover of XXL, Torae dropped his "Daily Conversation" to heavy critical acclaim. Skyzoo kept doin what he does best. Sha Stimuli dropped 12 mixtapes in 12 months. A Pinks was on MTVU and that lead to something even bigger. Donny Goines dropped his debut album. Nina B killed worldstarhiphop.com with Scenario. And those are just people I know personally.

I got a lot of shit in store for this year, so I hope those of you that really fuck with me are ready for the ride. The first full week of the year is now officially over and things dont show any signs of slowing down. My behind the scenes game is looking real strong, the records are definitely there, the creative process is continuous, and I'm in a great place right now. It takes confidence to have patience, but I've been just patient enough to let everything bubble at the same time, and everything is starting to align. So, that means its time to Show & Prove. Anslem, I see you! Im coming with that release date...HAHAHAAA

So in otherwords, if I haven't said it enough already, I'm focused. But not only am I focused, I'm moving. To infinity and beyond ladies and gentlemen.

This shit I really dont even know what to say about it honestly. I cant believe that it took me this long to really pay attention to what happened but this is a FUCKING SHAME. I dont give a fuck if the officer involved resigned or not. Hopefully the fact that he resigned and is no longer a cop leads to him getting convicted for MURDER.

My condolences to his family for their loss. No matter what the situation was, there's no way that he could have posed that much of a threat that he needed to be shot in this situation with 3 officers around and 2 trying to restrain him at the same time.

To the people out there in the Bay area. I understand your anger, I understand your frustration at what happened, and what you've seen. Please just keep in mind as you protest to be safe and as peaceful as humanly possible given the circumstances. I would hate to hear about any more deaths behind this incident

Please allow me to share with you how "The Secret" changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of "The Secret" is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don't want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing.

At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life.

My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be anally raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.

Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I've never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of "The Secret". Normally I wouldn't have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn't have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read.

The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the "Law of Attraction" in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn't exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 "The Secret to Relationships" that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point.

The next day in the exercise yard I carried "The Secret" with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness actually made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I'm not sure that everybody's life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I'm very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.

Right now I'm writing this from Tampa, FL where I had to stop for the day to handle some business, and then tomorrow it's off to New Orleans to continue the operation of soaking in Southern Hospitality and fighting off the NYC windchill that starts to get so ugly this time of year.

So what am I gonna be doing during this "Operation" you ask? Well tonight I'm gonna be celebrating my birthday somewhere in Tampa or St. Petersburg...I already got the word from the Airport Shuttle driver from my hotel that there are some clubs and strip clubs not far from my hotel...so I might have to see what that's all about. Once I get out of Tampa and hit New Orleans, I have a few concrete objectives that I need to accomplish in New Orleans...

1. Get my Aunt Patsy to make Gumbo

now what u dont see in the video is after right first round right before NY Oil went, I said that the next round we should all go off the top of the dome...so we all said fuck it and decided to go off top...

Now the way it was edited, u see NY Oil go in, and then Panama and then me...but like I said it was edited. AC and I agreed the shit was OD long, and even my freestyle as it was got cut a little bit to make it shorter. Anyway, more or less I was the only person that went off the top of the dome in the video that yall saw but again, it was edited. (and yes, I do have the full footage from my camera also...lol)

So if u feel like what I spit wasnt OD CRAZY its because I made it up as I was going along. It wasnt a file cabinet verse that I bring out when I want to wow niggas, it was me having fun, being in the moment, being tipsy and having fun with this stressful shit we call music.

Maybe its because people think that since I dont talk about any sort of violence or general street violence in my music that THEY CAN't GET IT.

There's been an increase in the amount of my temper that I've allowed to come out lately...and I dont really enjoy it...it's like Kanye said, "You're bringing out a side of me that I dont know" and I dont really think that they want to see it.

Every year at about this time people start looking back over their year that they realize just passed, and start thinking about what they wish they had done different, what they want to do more of for the upcoming year, etc etc etc. I'm in the process of doing the same thing, but I know my process doesn't really depend on the year to start or end...it's an ongoing thing.

One of the things that hit me kinda hard was how many people I was wround when I first started in this music shit, and how many of those people aren't around anymore. I was talkin to my dude PAT last night, who's been between Texas and Louisiana for the last couple years, and he was sayin how everyone he used to be around when he was up here other than me sounds like they gave up on music and hung their shit up.

Then I was having another conversation with A. Pinks and Donny Goines, and Pinks put it in terms everyone can understand... "Look to your left, look to your right, one of these people won't make it." It's sad but true. Out of any group of artists you see, unless they're seriously tight knit and decide that they're all gonna support each other, most likely only one is gonna succeed.

Then I got to thinking some more...how many people can I even name that made enough of an impact on me over these 3 years that I wonder where they are. The first name that I can think of is Doc Strange. I remember dude from the first open mic I ever did at the Platinum Lounge in Harlem...NASTY. But 3 years later I havent heard from dude at all, and wouldn't even know where to find him if I was lookin. The list goes on and on and on though.

There's millions of "Dope" artists out there. What separates the winners from the ones who never even get a chance to play the game on that level. That's the million dollar question LITERALLY. So once I figure that out, I'ma put myself on, and then charge the rest of you a healthy consulting fee to put the answer into practice for you...hahaha

Aight, let me break this down so it shall henceforth now and forever be broken...A lot of people ask me how I deal with all the hatin comments that people tend to leave whenever my music is posted up. And on the surface level for my friends who probably dont want to hear the scientific method behind my lack of a fuck given, I tell them simply "people are gonna hate mo matter what you do." General Hood Principle says that if you're not gettin hated on than you're not doing enough. So I dont mind, must mean I'm doing something right.

Now to those of you who respect science, and can appreciate math equations, lets do the math on how many people are actually hating, and how insignificant that number actually is in the grand scheme of things.

For the sake of argument, we'll take the last track that I blasted out, "Goin Off" (shameless self plug for the record I sent out yesterday).

Now remember these numbers are as current as when I wrote this post so by the time you click on taht zShare link to listen or download, they'll most likely be a little higher...

Now at the time of the screenshot, there were 697 downloads. Of those 697 downloads, 12 people chose to leave a comment on 2dopeboyz.com (shamleless plug for Shake & Meka). Now lets do the math:

12 (people who commented) / 697 (total downloads) = 1.72% (% of people who downloaded that commented

now lets say that 4 of those comments were direct hate...

4 (# of direct hatin comments) / 12 (total comments) = 33%

but, if we look at that number in terms of total downloads then it becomes:

4 (# of direct hatin comments) / 697 (total downloads) = .6% (% of people who downloaded who left a hatin comment)

so in other words, less that 1% of all the people who listened to the song actually left hate. Now thats a number that I'll be fine with every time out. The idea of cornfields and Friday night football games being the biggest social event in High School just wasn't the picture that I grew up with. People owning acres and cutting grass and building tree houses and doing housework just wasn't how I grew up. But our country is the same. From the Statue of Liberty to the Golden Gate Bridge people all over America are feeling a sense of involvement in the political system that has become temporarily more important than their jobs, their passions and their sensibilities. Because for once it feels like it actually matters who takes that seat in that oval office. So we need to get it right.

Aight, so it's pretty obvious by most of my posts on here that I dont really like writing. And I hate writing about my music that much more, but this right here deserved to be spoken on.

Before I say anything more, let me say that I'm listening to Windows Media Player by Charles Hamilton right now.

Ok now with that said. If you don't know by now, I'm from Harlem. If you didn't know, then now you do. I have it tatted on my right arm, and I designed the tattoo.

I have a project coming out called The Gardens. If you're from Harlem, you know what The Gardens is or where EG is.

Charles Hamilton is from Harlem. Charles Hamilton is a new artist. Charles Hamilton is signed to Interscope. I emailed Hamilton just to show love from one Harlem nigga makin noise to another. Small gesture of goodwill, a lot of people I know have been tryin to put together projects with both of us involved but we had never spoke. Hamilton writes back:

Yo you know what? I'm glad you emailed me b. A lot of n1ggas been tryna start a beef between us. Sendin me wild messages like "Esso don't f*ck wit Charles Hamilton..."... dead ass.

The part about this that pisses me off is who knows what homie would have thought if I never reached out? 2 niggas from the same hood on the same wavelength and people already trying to divide and conquer. I dont make conventional NY music, Hamilton doesn't make conventional NY music. We both kinda play the game by our own rules and have the same confidence that we know what the fuck we're doing enough to play by our own rules. If that aint a Harlem nigga then I dont know what is.

Anyway, I know most of the ADHD afflicted people that enjoy this blog won't read all of this but let it be known that there is no beef between ESSO and Charles Hamilton. Nor is there any beef between Charles Hamilton and ESSO.

By the way umm...maybe something good will come out of all of this after all...

I know I dont actually write very much here, but I figured why not? I have a bunch of things that have been on my mind and although I'm not necessarily gonna say all of them I figured a few of them needed to be spoken...or typed I guess at this point.

1. Stop criticizing the "doers"

There's a serious epidemic that I think happens way more online than anywhere else where people feel safe to anonymously hate on people that are actually doing something. I know, there's a parallel relationship between success and hate, but SHIT!

2. It Will Never Be 1994-2001 In New York Again

Please stop wishing that we were still back in the era of Reasonable Doubt and Illmatic and Ready To Die. Great time period undoubtedly, HOWEVER were they talking about bringing 84 back when they came out? How fucking absurd does it sound for us to be so nostalgic about a time period that started 14 years ago? People there are kids graduating 6th grade that were born after Illmatic was released. Think about that for a second.

Goes to Keyshia Cole...Now don't get me wrong, I fucks wit Keyshia. I actually rock with her album and can listen to it from front to back. But I also remember the first time I saw her live at the Apollo and knew her live performance was a little bit of a hit or miss...

So when I saw her performance at the BET Awards, I knew it was gonna be interesting. She started off singin about 20 feet in the air, on some sort of chair thing, "Straight from Heaven" I guess...kinda makes sense. Subliminal, nice. It's all about the detail people...

Once she hit the floor though, there werent really any more excuses for the straining or completely off notes, or trying to hit notes she knows just aren't in her yet. And then, to top it off, she brought out Lil Kim, and it became your favorite hoodrat's favorite performance. Oh yea, and Keyshia forgot her words before Kim came out too...

Congratulations Keyshia, I'm not sure if you won anything last night, but you sure as hell deserve an award in my book. Fuck it, at least you looked good doin it.
